The Dutch National Opera and Ballet Company

Helsinki Cathedral

Helsinki Cathedral is an Evangelical Lutheran cathedral in the Diocese of Helsinki. It was originally built as a tribute to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, and was known as St. Nicholas Church until Finland's independence in 1917. The cathedral, designed by Carl Ludvig Engenl and built between 1830 and 1852, is in the style of neoclassical architecture. Seen from the outside, it features a tall green dome, surrounded by four smaller domes, it is the highest point of Senaatintori Square. Inside, the plan of the cathedral is in Greek cross, that is, with a center of square mass and four arms with the same dimensions, being symmetrical in all 4 cardinal points, marked individually by a colonnade and a pediment.

Gunpowder tower
