Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam. After the expulsion of Jews from Spain by the "Catholic Kings" and around the year 1596, many Portuguese families of Jewish descent, tired of oppression in Portugal and desiring to return to openly practice their religion, headed for Amsterdam. The Iberian Jews (the so-called Sephardi) in the Netherlands obtained the status of educated people with a reflection on local life, whether in commercial, scientific or artistic life. The Synagogue was built in 1675 and is a Baroque building, where, in addition to religious ceremonies, you can attend concerts and cultural events. Portuguese Jews played an important role in the cultural and economic development of the Republic of the Netherlands. There they enjoyed the freedom of worship and expression, enviable by most Jews in the rest of the world. The Portuguese Jewish community would produce many figures of national and international renown, rabbis, scholars, philosophers, bankers, founders of international trade companies: Gracia Nasi, Isaac de Pinto, David Ricardo, Menasseh ben Israel, Isaac Aboab da Fonseca, Uriel Acosta, Baruch de Espinoza, among others.

João Chagas Garden, commonly known as Cordoaria Garden, because of the men who made or sold ropes, dates from 1924. With a triangular shape, here you can find trees classified as Public Interest. At the Old Town Square you will find The Orloj. The clock mechanism has three main components — the astronomical dial, representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky and displaying various astronomical details; statues of various Catholic saints stand on either side of the clock; "The Walk of the Apostles", a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures, notably a figure of a skeleton, representing Death, striking the time; and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months. According to local legend, the city will suffer if the clock is neglected and its good operation is placed in jeopardy; a ghost, mounted on the clock, was supposed to nod its head in confirmation. According to the legend, the only hope was represented by a boy born on New Year's night.
