The photographic archive of Lisbon is part of the Municipal Archive of Lisbon, one of the largest and oldest archives in the country, having a very diversified collection of documents, from the 13th century to the present day, consisting of funds and collections of documentation of a graphic nature and textual, cartographic and architectural, photographic and videographic, of great importance for the study of the city. In the case of a municipal service, the archive has the main responsibility for managing the documentation of the municipality, with the most representative set of documents consisting of the background of the Municipality of Lisbon, where all the documentation produced and preserved by this entity is integrated, regarding its scope of competences and the set of activities developed throughout its history. In addition to this fund, the archive also holds associated documentation, such as funds from the Municipality of Belém and the Parish Council of Belém, for their geographical and administrative relationship, or funds from the Casa dos Vinte e Quatro, of the Convent of São Francisco de Xabregas and the Brotherhood of São José dos Carpinteiros, related for historical, social and functional reasons. In parallel, the archive has funds and collections of photographs and videos, coming from private entities, which demonstrate the evolution of the city, in all its aspects and perspectives, portraying facts and events, from the end of the 19th century to the present, as it is possible to verify in the documentation of the funds of Artur Pastor, António Passaporte and Eduardo Portugal.
